Please God, Kill everyone else.
One of the most self gratifying aspects of conversing with a religious person is the sense of pride you feel when you ask the simplest of questions. These, of course, are the most difficult to answer. The hesitant nature of the response will only enforce the truth; that these people are clutching at straws.
The very nature of the Bible lies in how people interpret it. Nothing in this argument is more important. To those readers that are avid followers of religious blogs such as Pharyngula or even those that trawl Answers In Genesis for enlightenment will be aware of the importance of interpretation. Many will have already concluded that this is a simple layman’s approach to the argument against God. However, I have found that throwing out the jargon that religious people like to throw around is important. There will be no talk of Rapture here.
The fact remains, and forever will, that if you were born in the Middle East, you are likely to have been raised Muslim. If you were born in Ireland, you will most likely have been raised either Protestant or Catholic. Claiming that your religion is the one true faith is like claiming that Jesus was in fact, Caucasian. If you lay this down as your foundation for belief, I would think that it is only right that you at least question your belief system? The fact remains, whether you choose to acknowledge it or not, that your place of birth will largely affect the faith you choose to follow, if any.
This brings up the question of the ‘born – agains’. These religious half breeds have almost no excuse.
Interpretation is a fine thing. It must be said that in the Middle East today, the war is being fought with each opponent firmly believing that God is on their side. So, this begs the question; Who’s side is he on, If any? Surely, for a God that created humanity, alongside all the very complex (insert creationist nonsense here) elements, atoms and molecules that are part of our makeup, He would be in support of his own creation?
So, does God take sides? Does God favour the Al Qaeda over the American troops? Did God favour Hitler over Bin Laden? Of all the dictators he allows to inhabit his fallen world, which is his favourite?
Of course, to us in the West He is on our side. He answers our prayers when a loved one gets sick. He helps you get that Playstation 3 you wanted for Christmas, and helps you pass your exams. What doesn’t happen in reality, is any of the above. The people who help your loved ones are called doctors, the people who buy your Playstation’s are called parents and you alone can pass your exams.
This is the reason that religion itself, in my opinion, is a flawed concept. If there is not a criteria to judge a ‘one true’ religion, then all must be judged with the same critique. If you claim you are a part of the ‘one true’ faith, then you better have decent proof. Unfortunately a Bible doesn’t cut it. If Joseph Smith can create a Bible out of his own delusional ramblings and create a self-serving religion as a result, that’s not proof of divine influence. Many Christians, at this point will say that the Bible is different. That the books could not be fraudulent because of the sheer scope of it all. Well, talk to a Muslim, they might disagree. Neither can you trust the actual advocates of religion. With the creationists claiming the world was formed with a literal interpretation of the Bible (6 days), Jehovah’s witnesses knocking on Heavens door, the Jews wanting to mutilate your children, and the Catholic’s following suit, it seems the only way to solve this is to lock them all in one metaphorical melting pot and leave them to sort out their issues. While the rest of us ignore ‘spirituality’ altogether, and live a fulfilling life without the constant threat of doom over our heads, safe in the knowledge that when we eventually die, we won’t have to have the same old boring conversations with a wannabe Ken Ham, shouting Bible verses at you from the very secure, well-funded organisation in which he probably resides.
It seems apparent, that in light of the constant topic of science vs religion there is a better topic brewing; religion vs religion.
It’ll be like Gladiators, but without the cool factor.
